Issue of the Week
Held within the shadow of the Port of Long Beach's 22% 2009 box downturn, and against the backcloth of the transpacific liners' nightmare cumulative USD15 billion loss-making 12-months, the JOC's 10th Transpacific Maritime Conference (TPM) this week degenerated into a war of words between shippers and carriers.
Indeed, in some instances debating sessions at the TPM parodied a Jerry Springer-style TV show: packed full of arguing by dysfunctional families. But soothing pragmatic words from an industry veteran may yet help to rebuild the bridges necessary for the long-term mutual interests of the shipper and the carrier.
